Shireen Abu Akleh

On May 11, Israeli occupation forces deliberately targeted and killed veteran Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in Jenin Refugee Camp in occupied West Bank. Shireen was working as a journalist with Al Jazeera Arabic and was in Jenin to cover a raid by Israeli forces.

Comrade Rakesh Diwakar

Comrade Rakesh Diwakar of Pratappur (Bhojpur) died in a tragic accident in the morning of 18 May. A high school teacher in Pavna village, he was making his daily trip to school on his bike with his friend and colleague Rajesh Kumar, when their bike was run over at Tetariya Mod by an overloaded tractor carrying sand.

Red Salute to Aijaz Ahmad!

Noted Marxist thinker Aijaz Ahmad passed away on 9 March in Irvine, California. He leaves behind a rich intellectual tradition. An Urdu writer and literary critic, Aijaz Ahmad mounted a robust defence of the Marxist method against post-Marxist, postmodern and post-structuralist theories. His In Theory: Classes, Nations, Literatures, first published in 1992, emerged as a Marxist classic, inspiring scholars across the globe and providing them with the intellectual framework to challenge the various “post” ideologies sweeping academia.

Obituary: Comrade Shanti Devi

Shanti Devi, life partner of Comrade Mahendra Singh and mother of Bagodar MLA Comrade Vinod, passed away on 16 January 2022. She passed away on Comrade Mahendra’s martyrdom day. Comrade Shanti Devi had been ailing for some time and had been admitted in the Bokaro District Hospital. When the CPIML was underground, Comrade Shanti had opened her home to the party to serve as a centre for revolutionary activities and a shelter for Comrade Vinod Mishra and other party leaders.

Obituary: Comrade Dilip Dasgupta

Comrade Dilip Dasgupta breathed his last on 15 January at the Assam Medical College and Hospital, Dibrugarh where he had been undergoing treatment after having suffered a stroke in his respiratory tract.  Comrade Dilip had joined the Party in 1980 while he was a member of Namrup Fertiliser Cooperation Party Group. Hailing from Jamuguri Hat of Sonitpur district of Assam, Comrade Dasgupta started his professional career as a lecturer of Chemistry in one of the famous colleges of Assam - the Darrang College of Tezpur.

Obituary: Comrade Kshitish Biswal

With the demise of Comrade Kshitish Biswal we lost yet another veteran communist leader whose journey had begun in the final years of India's freedom movement. He was born on 5 May 1930 in Tipuri village of Puri district. The youngest of the three sons born to Brundaban Biswal and Rohini Devi, Kshitish Biswal grew up as a sensitive person caring for the common good of his village. In 1940-41 the village faced a severe cholera epidemic claiming as many as twenty-six lives including six people in the Biswal family.

Comrade Chandreshwar Prasad Rai

Veteran leader of State Govt employees' movement in Bihar and Jharkhand and CPIML Hazaribag District committee member Comrade Chandreshwar Prasad Rai, 76, passed away on 24 August. He suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. We mourn this unfortunate loss and pay our condolences to his bereaved family, friends and comrades.
