The Indian Constitution As A Site For Struggle
by Kavita Krishnan

India’s Undeclared Emergency: Constitution and the Politics of Resistance by Arvind Narrain, published by Imprint Context, Westland Publications Limited, January 2022.

Arvind Narrain not only walks us through a granular history of the Emergency, but invites us to assess the ongoing Modi regime by the same lens we use to look back at the Emergency. This book is perhaps the first to capture the legal armature of the Indian state in the process of its ongoing metamorphosis into a Hindu-supremacist state. Without letting up on the relentless examination of how India's Constitution is being emptied of its essence, Narrain also documents the "cracks through which the light gets in". The reader is invited to be, not a mourner at a funeral, but a fighter for change, learning how to cultivate hope and build solidarities. A book that illuminates and inspires, it is an urgently needed resource for young Indians.
