Uttarakhand: Bagjala Sit-in Marks Bhagat Singh’s Birth Anniversary

On the 42nd day (September 28) of the indefinite sit-in at Bagjala, the All India Kisan Mahasabha organized a programme to mark the birth anniversary of Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh. The event began with the resounding slogan of “Inquilab Zindabad,” Bhagat Singh’s favorite call. Participants pledged to carry forward his vision and to spread people’s awareness against the deliberate promotion of communal frenzy across the country.

Cultural performances including songs like Sarfaroshi ki tamanna, Ladna hai bhai ye to lambi ladai hai, and Mera rang de basanti chola filled the gathering with revolutionary spirit. Alongside, the protesters reiterated their eight-point demands which include granting ownership rights to Bagjala residents, lifting the ban on construction, and restoring the right to panchayat elections.

Addressing the programme, CPI(ML) district secretary Dr. Kailash Pandey said, “The situation in the country today makes Bhagat Singh’s ideas even more relevant. His words fit the Modi government precisely—that when any government attacks the basic rights of the people, it becomes the people’s fundamental right and duty to overthrow that government.” He condemned the destruction of youth aspirations through exam paper leaks, the loot of public resources, rising violence against women, Dalits and minorities, and the deepening communal divisions. He called upon workers, peasants, youth, students, women, small traders and all marginalized sections to unite in the struggle to uproot this anti-people regime.

Congress SC Cell district president Inder Pal Arya said that the sacrifices of martyrs like Bhagat Singh have given us the right to breathe freely today. “Only by walking together on their path of unity can we achieve our rights. If we work as one fist, the government will have to listen,” he added.

Dr. Urmila Raiswal underlined that Bhagat Singh’s ideas are a source of inspiration for building a new India based on equality and justice, free of discrimination. “We need policies not for the profits of corporates but for the interests of workers and peasants,” she said. Vimla Devi added that at a time when caste and communal divisions are deepening and violence against women is rising, the relevance of Bhagat Singh’s socialist vision is greater than ever.

The protest in Bagjala, is based on an eight-point charter of demands:

  1. Cancel all notices served to villagers under the pretext of encroachment removal.
  2. Lift restrictions on construction works.
  3. Repair damaged roads and construct pucca roads in place of kutcha roads.
  4. Immediately resume the Jal Jeevan Mission’s Har Ghar Nal, Har Ghar Jal scheme.
  5. Restore the right of Bagjala residents to participate in panchayat elections and include them in the voter list.
  6. Pass a proposal in the assembly to grant ownership rights to Bagjala residents on existing possession and declare it a revenue village without delay.
  7. Ensure government purchase of cattle at fixed prices under the Cow Protection Act to stop losses faced by farmers, cattle rearers and commuters.
  8. Grant ownership rights to all residents of forest and nazul land in Nainital district, including Bagjala.
